6 Tips on Cleaning Your Home Against Allergens

In Fort Collins, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, the sun is staying out longer every day. Picnics are happening, bees are buzzing, and you? You’re inside with toilet paper shoved up your nostrils and Benadryl coursing through your veins.

Everyone’s mowing their yard at the same time and your eyes are leaking. Is it allergies or are you crying?

You take shelter indoors to escape the allergen apocalypse but I’ve got bad news. Your house is full of allergy-inducing evils, too. The good news is that it is possible to breathe easier in your own home and we’re here to help.

Fort Collins house cleaning experts know a lot about improving the air quality in your home and are here to give you some advice.

How do I clean my home to eliminate allergens?

There are many things you can do around your home to prevent the spread of allergen. Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks for combatting indoor allergies.

Carpet cleaning

If your allergies are very severe and/or you have pets, you should consider getting rid of your wall-to-wall carpet. If you must have carpet, choose a low-pile variety instead of fluffier versions.

Shampoo your carpet regularly and vacuum at least twice a week.

Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter. Check the ingredients of your shampoo because strong perfumes and other ingredients will likely make your allergies worse.

Cleaning your bedroom

You spend a lot of time in bed. Your bedroom should be the room in your house with the least allergens so you can get a good night’s sleep and enjoy all the things that happen in there. You know what’s a real mood killer? A runny nose and hives.

Wash your bedding at least every week. Use a hypoallergenic pillow and mattress cover and washable pillows.

Don’t let your pets sleep in your room. I know. This is possibly the hardest thing we’re going to suggest. It’s worth it, though and you’ll be better rested for quality cuddles and play later.

Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to find the right humidity levels for your room. Most experts suggest between 30 and 50 percent.

General tidying up

You know what doesn’t bring joy? Allergies. Tidying up and limiting clutter goes a long way toward keeping allergens at bay. You will gather less dust and cleaning will be easier to keep up with.

Books are often a big source of dust and we’ve found that our clients often forget to dust this area. Limit the number of books you keep on a shelf and make sure to dust them regularly.

Gallery walls are super trendy but minimal wall decor will give dust fewer places to hide.

Washing windows

Choose curtains that can easily be tossed in the washer and do so often. If you use blinds, dust them often.

Keep your windows closed when pollen counts are high. Putting a HEPA filter air purifier near the window when it’s open for an air-out is really helpful.

Tackling the bathroom

Check for mold! Especially if your bathroom doesn’t have a lot of ventilation, mold could be building up and making you miserable.

Use shower curtains that can be wiped down easily and are machine washable.

Shower before bed to remove all of the dust and grossness from your day so you’re hitting the sheets with a fresh start every night.

Ensuring proper maintenance

Make sure your A/C filters are changed as often as needed. Not only will this help reduce allergies, it will also reduce your utility bill and increase your cooling efficiency.

The above goes for things like vacuums, purifiers, and fans, too.

Speaking of maintenance, did you know we now have a handyman service?
