There’s nothing better than a young bookworm in training, but kids books are like dust bunnies – they gather and multiply as fast as you can blink!
It can be tiring to sort out piles of books, especially when kids like to store them in or near their beds, and finding their favorite must-read nighttime book among piles and piles can be frustrating.
Three really simple organizing tricks can help your little one keep up their reading habit while also helping you keep your sanity!
DIY Organizing Tip #1: A bed-side cart can keep books out of bed
Sometimes it’s hard to know if your kid has more books or stuffed animals in their bed. If they can’t roll over without getting poked by their favorite bedtime book, it’s time to come up with a better solution. A rolling cart (like this one: https://www.target.com/p/3-tier-metal-utility-cart-made-by-design-153/-/A-53314604?preselect=53166281#lnk=sametab) can put favorite toys in easy reach, but also provides a nice shelf for your kids’ favorite nighttime books AND keeps them out of the bed.
DIY Organizing Tip #2: Smaller picture books can be kept in magazine holders
It’s like a slow-motion avalanche; your kiddo pulls their favorite soft-cover picture book off the shelf and every other book starts falling out behind it. All of a sudden you have 40 picture books spread across the floor and a big mess to clean up. Some simple magazine holders can help you avoid this tragic twist of fate – small picture books can fit inside, easily accessible, but without the threat of spilling all out at once. These can then be stowed away on a bookshelf as normal. As a bonus, you can organize these bins by characters and decorate the fronts with pictures of those characters, making cleanup a snap – because your kiddos will know exactly which bin to put books back into.
DIY Organizing Tip #3: Character bookmarks
If your kiddo has their own Library of Alexandria, then it’s time to help them create a system to both find their favorites and put the books back where they belong. One of the easiest ways to do this is to create “bookmarks” that hang out slightly past the shelf with pictures of characters on them. You might have a “LEGO” section, a “Daniel Tiger” section, an Elephant and Piggie section… or you can organize by theme (Animals, Buildings, Cars), style, or reading level – whatever makes the most sense for your kiddo’s reading habits.
It’s a great thing to have a child who loves to read and the best thing we can do as parents is to keep fostering that love of reading while also letting slide the little frustrations that come along with it.
